A ranger's friend in PvE is troll unguent - massive regen in 10 seconds, low energy, and able to be continuously used. I've had it for a long time, but lately during pvp i find myself not packing it.
As a ranger who goes max offensive usually if i become focus target i die very quickly. if, however, I'm ignored I can dish out some damage. I want to bring troll unguent so I can live sometimes, but I rarely do, and even more rarely use it because i keep forgetting it. I prefer pindown, since i actually use it several times.
So do you pack TU on your rangers or do you ignore it? do you think it's a necessary skill?

TU is in my opinion pretty much a necessity. Especially with a good enough expertise it only costs 2-3 energy.

I take it into random arena but I wouldnt take it into tombs. If you are about to take a sip and there's other rangers in the area then I would suggest you go into a stance like whirling defence before taking a sip... the long activation time is asking for a distracting shot.

TU takes too long period, which is why i always pack Whirling Defense and either Dodge, Dryder's Defenses or Lightning Reflexes with it along with Oath Shot. if i ever bring TU, i always activate it when using a stance. and i always pray that the axe warrior hacking away at nothing doesn't get lucky with his Disrupting Chop.

yeah... other then the casting time of TU... it's a great skill...

i just love when i'm up against a R/ or /R and there casting it... first i'll interupt it with Punishing Shot {E} at 2/3... then they'll try to use it again and i ll get it again at 2/3 with Distracting Shot... by then their almost dead mwhaha

I'd agree that its very useful in random arenas (but not tombs). The trick is to use TU slightly before you're going to need it. When you see that axe warrior headed your way, if you don't have a stance or throw dirt available...then its time to put up TU! In randoms if you have room on your skillbar for whirling d, throw dirt, and TU, you can pretty much stay up indefinitely against most warriors.

I pretty much ignore TU in many builds; in PvE you should have a decent monk, and a ranger shouldn't be getting hit that much. A defensive stance or throw dirt is normally enough to make the difference anyway, and are much faster than TU, and don't require Wilderness Survival. If I am making a build with high wilderness survival anyway then I consider TU, if I am doing a barrage build/touch ranger/IWranger or anything like that it's not worth touching, as I don't need preparations.

I don't even take this into Random unless I'm really struggling on something else to pick.

It's just a ( selfish...?? ) self-heal that prolongs the defeat and cuts down my damage and utility. I'd rather bring:
- A Nature Ritual
- An offensive Stance
- A Preparation
- A Snare
- An Enchantment Stripper
- An extra Interupt

I don't care if you/your brother/best friend won the fight which would've been otherwise lost, against a scrub team in Random Arena who had no Monk. That hardly shows the value of the skill.

So why bring this into any form of organised PvP..?? You don't ( unless you have no confidence in your Monks but then your probably doomed from the offset )

When you do become targeted ( probably last ) -- 9 pip's of health regen aren't gonna save you, just as Healing Breeze or Life Transfer won't...

I tend to take melandru's resiliance a lot of the times - it's Elite, but then again, i usually play a heal monk, so i take draw conditions with it. :-)

Unless I really know the monks I'm with, I always pack trolls. It's kept me alive in many many arena battles when no monks were present, and it's also a monks best friend imo... they spend a lot less time worrying about me and healing others.

Antidote signet > TU
Its a must in PvE though. good monks are hard to come by, and you can afford one slot to ease the burden on them anyway.

I would personally disagree... antidote doesn't give you anything back, where trolls can negate any degenerative effects and usually turn them into a net health gain long enough for most of them to run the course. The time spent casting the two is better spent on Trolls, and trolls will keep monks from needing to remove every condition you get.

Trolls + whirling > Antidote + whirling too, when that warrior that thinks he can actually beat a ranger

runs up to your face and starts swinging.

Of course, it's merely my opinion.

in tombs PVP, only the archer henchman brings TU. if you have this mad desire to emulate the archer henchman (i do sometimes, dont be shy), then go ahead and use it.

however, aside from that TU is useless for the simple reason, that in tombs TU will not save you from a coordinated attack. in any way. ignoring the fact that you will probably be dead before you put it on, if 10 pips are saving you from an enemy attack in 8v8 its a good time to start groaning about civilization.

otoh, in CA this skill may have some limited use. for example, if you are playing against a team of all monks and no one on your team has a self heal, you face the very real possibilty of getting wanded to death since there isnt much you can do to regen your hp back.

however, it honestly doesnt matter IMO. if you won the battle by using TU i think you would have won without it, and if you lost and didnt have TU you probably would have lost with it too. and since i personally dont care about winning in CA... well... who cares. id rather bring another skill for fun.

but the bottom line is, if i see you using TU in tombs im going to hack GW and rename your acount and all characters in it to "wannabe archer henchman"

i dont get it, are you implying that i make no sense or that the archer henchman DOESNT bring TU?

because i know for a fact that she does. ive pugged with her, we had some pretty long discussions on it, and it turns out she just didnt unlock any other skills to bring.

The making no sense part. Of course, I only have my own opinion to toss back, so take that for what it's worth.

do you have a problem with that
